NCTAF Will Stay the Course to Transform the Teaching Profession

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

This is one of my favorite quotes. It rings as true today, as when Mead first said it more than 50 years ago.

In my 12 years as the President of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future, I have been fortunate to work with a dedicated team of people, who are and have been determined to transform schools infused with factory-era teaching into 21st century learning organizations that engage students in deeper learning to meet the challenges of a global economy.

We have made great strides, and I am proud of the Commission’s legacy of work and its deep commitment to give every child in America access to quality teaching in schools organized for success.

Recently, I came to the conclusion that the time is right for me to explore an encore career that will balance my commitment to innovative teaching and learning with rewarding family time. With that said, I will be retiring from NCTAF on March 1.

However, I will continue to support NCTAF’s mission as the President Emeritus. It is my pleasure to announce that our current Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Melinda George, has been appointed the Commission’s next President.

This is an exciting time in education and I have complete confidence in Melinda’s ability to stay the course as the NCTAF Commission works to build a 21st century teaching profession.

Staying the Course …

Tom is a true leader and visionary and I am so glad that I have been able to work closely with him over these last two-and-a-half years. As I prepare to step into this position, it is comforting to know that he remains available to offer wisdom and insight.

NCTAF has a long history of being a strong proponent for teaching and in this time of global competition and educational reform, we will use our national voice to advocate support for teachers through collaboration and teamwork, new tools and technology, and personalized growth and learning.  These key areas are critical to improve education for children across the United States.

As we continue to tackle the challenges that affect the teaching profession, it is a true privilege to formulate strategies with our amazing commissioners, led by our Co-Chairs, the former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley and former Education Commission of the States President Ted Sanders.

NCTAF is approaching its 20th anniversary and we are taking stock of how far the teaching profession has come, and which areas still need to be addressed. Our group of thoughtful, committed citizens is staying the course to make an even greater impact on the teaching profession. Look to hear more from the Commission as we move forward in 2014!
