On August 10, the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future (NCTAF) will issue a call to collective action around a new vision for teaching and learning. In addition, the Commission will release What Matters Now: A New Compact for Teaching & Learning. This report will provide guidance on how to migrate to an education system where schools are reorganized in ways that support teaching, drive learning, and provide every student with a strong foundation to build a bright future.
NCTAF seeks to help educators capitalize on this time when policy and practice are shifting toward more engaging and relevant teaching and learning for all students. The new vision described in the report explains that:
- teachers will have more agency and new roles and leadership opportunities and will, in turn, be supported by a system of aligned resources and supports; and
- these efforts will be supported by a new shared accountability that encourages collaboration, use of data within a context of continuous improvement, and teacher-led professional learning.
It was 20 years ago that NCTAF released the organization’s foundational report, What Matters Most: Teaching for America’s Future, which proposed an audacious goal that America would provide every student access to competent, caring, and qualified teaching. While significant progress has been made, the changes have not been systemic and our most vulnerable children continue to lose out.
Despite the persistent issues, NCTAF Commissioners remain optimistic that now is the time to act due to major shifts in education and our society as a whole. We invite you to join us this week to learn about the Commission’s rationale for seeking to change the current education design.
While unpacking the report, we will also discuss a number of areas, including:
- the education landscape and the urgency to act now,
- ESSA and the changing policy landscape,
- a systematic approach that supports great teaching for all students, and
- recommendations and strategies for moving teaching and learning forward.
We encourage you to be a part of this dialogue and partner with us so that all teachers are supported in their work and every child is able to engage in learning that is relevant and meaningful.
